They fit perfectly. But the black. Oh man, the black. Try taking a picture of black knitting to get the detail to show up. With an iPhone. Good luck with that. If it wasn't for that, they would be seriously perfect.
I love everything about these mittens. The simple appearance, the perfect stretch over the thumb. No silly looking add-on thumb gusset. A natural part of the mitt, gracefully stretching and contracting as the thumb moves. Perfection!
On the topic of Dylan's perfect custom mitts, I want to share an idea with you and see what you think about it.
Later this month, Dylan will once again be participating in a St. Baldrick's head-shaving event. Basically, to show solidarity with kids who are enduring cancer treatments (and often losing their hair in the process), he, along with a handful of other OVO people, will shave their heads. And along the way, they'll be collecting donations to go to childhood cancer research. It's a great cause, and one that we really support as more and more of the people we know are becoming parents, and we watch some of them as they deal with their children struggling through cancer treatments. We look at our beautiful, wonderful daughter, and are beyond grateful for her health. So, we want to support research, to help protect our daughter, our friends' children, and all children by supporting cancer research, especially for these amazing little humans who are just starting out in the world.
How does this relate to Dylan's mitts, you ask? Excellent question. I'm glad you asked.
One of my favorite writers/bloggers/knitters, the Yarn Harlot, does a yearly fundraiser for AIDS, through the Friends for Life Bike Rally. She trains all spring, fundraises like crazy for a month or so, then rides her bike from Toronto to Montreal in 6 days. Usually with a fair amount of "what am I doing?" being expressed in her blog during those months of training and the six days of exhaustion. But two years in a row, her team has made the most money in fundraising. Because she writes about it in her blog and the knitters who follow her (she has quite a few followers....) make donations, big and small. And she recognizes how incredible it is, and how lucky she is on so many levels, and decides to give away "karmic balancing gifts" (donated yarn, knitted/knitting related gifts, etc) to randomly selected people who have donated.
And I'm thinking of doing the same thing with Dylan's St. Baldrick's donations this year. Any one who donates, any amount, would be entered in the drawing. And the winner would get a pair of custom knit mitts.
Because, sometimes it doesn't quite feel like enough that Dylan's going to shave his head. Truth is, he needs it. (shhh, don't tell him I said that). So, some other positive action needs to go out into the universe to balance the good that the donations will do. I think a yummy pair of custom mitts is just the thing.
What do you think?
Oh, if you want to donate to the cause, here's the link to Dylan's donation page for this year's event.
