Kangaroo

When I was a little girl, my Grandmother visited Australia and had a wonderful time. Her pictures of her trip were one of the reasons I always wanted to come here.

She also brought me two gifts: a sheepskin and a necklace. I loved both of them. The necklace was an opal kangaroo, and I wore it all the time. I don't remember how or when the tail broke off, but I remember how guilty I felt, sure that it had been an expensive gift.

So I was a little surprised when I saw these opal kangaroos for $5 in all the gift shops we've been in.

It may never have been an expensive gift, but it was priceless for how it brings back memories of a grandmother's love from years and worlds away. And I'm glad it was so easy to replace so I can keep a memory of her with me all the time.
